Competing in a tournament like Golden Gloves is something that amateur boxers aspire to. It’s the reward for months and months of challenging training, like a tasty pizza pie after a long workout. Well, boxing may be an individual sport- boxers do have to step into the Ring alone- but getting a Boxer ready to compete in a tournament like Golden Gloves takes a whole team. Everyone contributes a slice of the pie from Coaches, Family Members, the Team Manager and Team Mates, to the head of Gym Maintenance and the Office Manager.
On Friday, Boxer Will Greenwood took on a huge challenge by stepping into the Ring with an opponent with four times the experience he has. Coach Ann and Will started the day off by heading down to weigh-ins at 7:15 AM in the morning. Coach Margaret who was teaching the morning class gave the duo a great send off with cheers from all of the hard-working morning boxers in the Gym. After weigh-ins, Will headed back to Gym HQ where he and Coach Cap dealt with the long “wait” time. The hours of waiting between weigh-ins and matches can be challenging but they are also great opportunities to practice Life Skills. In this case, Cap and Will teamed up to make a tasty sausage and mushroom pizza. Noticing the theme?!
After the Coaches Meeting, Coach Ann drove back up to CBC HQ where Office Manager Vanessa was working on the books. Both grabbed a slice of pizza before Coach Ann picked up Team Manager Lynna and Boxer Brennan. Brennan and Lynna were contributing crucial pieces of the whole pie. Lynna assisted in prepping Will for his match and Brennan stepped up to act as second in the corner, his first cornering experience since passing his Coach Certification exam.
Back at the Gym, Coaches Mike and Casey made sure all the Boxers at home got their workouts in. Maintenance man Devo kept the Gym looking as fit as the Boxers.
At 7:20 PM, Will stepped into the Ring with the support of a whole Team behind him including his family who had come to watch him take on his toughest match yet. Will gave his all to the match, sticking to his game plan and executing his strategy like a pro. We are all proud of his milestone match!
